Sales of Dental Practices Face Interesting Times in Florida
Tax implications, capital gains unknown as administration changes; sellers sit tight.
(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - NAPLES, FLORIDA July 16, 2008)
Changes in the executive branch may slow down retirement plans for dentists, according to Hy Smith, president of ADS Florida. The head of the leading Florida dental transition and appraisal firm, Smith says, “Post election, there is a distinct possibility that the capital gains rate will increase, which could create a significant increase in the seller’s tax burden – that would be a reason to sell this year over next.” He explains, “The unknowns of an administration change and the impact on capital gains tax makes it an appealing time to retire in Florida.”
Smith has noticed trends indicating that sellers of dental practices are postponing sales because of current economic conditions. “While we can certainly understand why the current climate is less appealing than selling five years ago,” Smith says, “things may not be as bad as they seem. As more dentists postpone retirement, an excess of buyers for good quality, well located offices in the state is developing.”
“As Adam’s invisible hand manages the supply and demand of dental practices in Florida, things will become interesting quickly,” Smith predicts, noting that he has seen this before. “It’s a good time to be prepared to sell,” he states, “even if it’s not for another year or so. As factors change, practice owners want to be able to make a move expeditiously.”
